Software Review – Competition Entry from Thomas B. Review of the software „Vantage Point“ This is the competition entry from Thomas B. As he says he is not promoting this product but is simply telling you his findings. It certainly has some very interesting scientific theories, many of which are way above my limited brain power & a VERY interesting price! But it is important to consider all options when trying to master any skill.

When I began to deal with Forex Trading I looked around for possible technical support, especially software solutions. As you probably know there are plenty offerings on the market. Reading John Murphy’s “Technical Analysis” I became aware of a software called “VantagePoint” (VP). Murphy writes that he knows the founder of “tradertech”, the company which developed the software.

He described the basic approach: using neural networks for predictions of different markets. I am not an expert in neural networks. To make it short you may think of it like a human brain. Our brain everyday collects many different impressions and information of various kind and synapses in our brain connect those impressions so that we as people may be able to transfer all of these in case we have to make decisions. (I am not a biologist as you probably have guessed, so please excuse my amateurish explanation.)

Transferred to the Forex market it means the following: VP is a software which, for example, does not only look how the EUR/USD behaved the last few days/weeks but collects and connects information from other markets (gold, oil, other currency pairs) which are to some degree related to – in this case – the EUR/USD-pair.

Please allow me to cite their website, since they can explain it best: “VantagePoint uses neural network technology to analyze the data to find the twenty-five related markets that most affect prices of your target market, quantifies the degree of influence these related markets have on your market and then uses that information to forecast trend direction, market strength and daily trading ranges in a simple-to-read chart and report.”

To make it clear: I am not a VP-representative or have any relations to that company. I only want to share my experiences with that product since I think it is a helpful tool because it inherits an approach which is unique and totally different from all other points of view I know.

So, after reading Murphy’s remarks I considered to give this product a try. My first shock came when I saw the price: VP charges for the part of the software which analyses only the major pairs 2.900 USD, and if you want to have analyzed the cross pairs as well, another 1.000 USD! (Annotation: this is the price for the software; in addition you have to subscribe the daily data flow via Commodities Research Bureau, CRB, in Chicago, which costs about 30 USD/month.)

Well, since I got a bonus payment last year from my employer (no, I am not an investment banker ) I bought the software as a Christmas present for myself. (Annotation: ask for special offers, they definitively will give you the packages cheaper than mentioned on your website!) Only two days later the package from the USA (software CD and two books plus manual) arrived in my home in Germany and I installed it.

I have been using it now for about six months and can tell you, that this is definitively something different! It’s not he holy grail but a very valuable tool which gives you a totally different (in terms of approach) view on the market(s) you are trading.

The software is not easy to understand, since they use at least some proprietary indicators like the “Neural Index” which predicts whether a given market is turning up or down within the next two days. It’s accuracy was proven by independent experts and is up to 86%.

So, you have to read the books which come with the software more than once (they are well written and explain everything very good, so if you are not a native English reader you will understand them without problem). They give hints how you may apply the software to your trading style, no matter whether you are a day or position trader. You can use this software as stand alone tool and base your trading decisions only on VP forecasts, but I rather use it as add on to the trading style we are using together with our “master” Marc

I was very positively surprised by tradertech’s customer support. It’s definitively not a “give us your bucks and then piss off!” On the contrary! Within the first weeks the guys from the customer support called me regularly and asked whether they could help me in understanding the software and solve any problems I might have. They have a toll free number you can call from other countries than the USA. I was very impressed by that and appreciated this really. All questions were answered, all emails within short time as well.

To my mind, this software is very helpful, especially at times when Marc comes to the conclusion “Honestly I don’t know in which direction this pair will move the next day(s)” – which is ok! VP really was able to predict the direction correctly, very often!

I suggest that you just look at their website to get an own impression. My suggestions: watch the learning center where all the different indicators are explained in short videos:

And you should watch Greg Firman’s videos; a professional trader who uses VP and from Monday-Wednesday uploads videos with trades for the following week/days for free. Definitively worth watching!! (VantagePoint : Greg Firman Shares His Trading Insights for Forex and Futures Markets)
